Yoga and Drumming!
Not so long ago I had no idea of the diversity and breadth of yoga. All I had was a bunch of questions and strong apprehensions. I wondered, "Is it a religion? Is it just a bunch weird posing? Is it really exercise? What do Yoga and Rhythm/drumming have in common, if anything?" Well, years later, I have learned that yoga is many things to many different people and that yoga has something for most everyone. It really depends on what you're looking for. The most important thing is to find the right instructor and yoga home/facility. That way whatever goals you have for yoga, be they fitness, wellness, community or spiritual, you will be in the right place with the right guidance and instruction.
My introduction to yoga began innocently enough when I was asked to lead a drum circle at Forest House Yoga, by Debbie Forrest nearly seven years ago. She was acutely aware of the natural fit of combining drumming and percussion with yoga. Debbie showed me how live drumming/percussion can be used to support chant and other yoga activities. As the AZ Rhythm Connection has grown, we have found the yoga community to be our leading partner. All of our drum classes and Wellness Through Rhythm Sessions are held in yoga studios. Yoga and Rhythm are a natural fit!
